For century’s animal skins have been used many things, clothing, footwear, belts, shelter and musical instruments to name a few.
The Traditional Medicine drum or Irish Bodhran, a round or oval shaped drum, was constructed of a timber hoop with an animal skin tensioned over the hoop to produce a powerful instrument used in ceremony.
Today, this type of traditional drum, in many different styles, are still being produced using Deer, Goat & Kangaroo Skin.
Our Deer Skin & Kangaroo Skin are pickled and are perfect for the craft of making traditional styled Medicine Drums.
Stored Wet, pickled skin keeps for many, many moons without fouling or becoming smelly, ready for use at any time.
No need to soak (do not soak in liquid), just a simple good rinse in water with some Bi-carb soda and they are ready to craft.
Pickled Skin has a long working time, giving you plenty of time to craft a Medicine drum without worry of the skin drying out before you finish and the off-cuts are great for making rattles, Beaters and other craft.
Once dry, Pickled skin produces great tone, though, in damp conditions (as does rawhide) skin absorbs moisture and begins to flatten and become flabby, but unlike rawhide, Pickled Skin does not wrinkle, warp or become sweaty, sit in the sun or apply a small amount of heat over a heater or hair dryer and the skin returns to its original tension.
